when people in the Toyobaru community buy aftermarket unequal length headers, simply because of the sound.

Hey, if you're gonna have a slow car, it should at least sound nice.

I want to get a catted el header with a tune, because I'd rather not have to worry about CELs/emissions testing, but there aren't many out there. I really wish Tomei's el header was catted.

I got mine partly cause of the soufnd, partly cause they are cheaper and partly because they don't get so close to the airbox! Oh and power too!
I also don't get the catted header part... Totally defeats the point of a header. You need a good collector and good lengths!

It sounds much better with an equal length header. You know, like a proper sports car with a flat-4 should. I just simply don't understand paying money to give your vehicle a less efficient header system just for the boxer warble.

with a proper tune, the entire cat readiness is permanenylt set to "complete" it should pass emissions just fine. Unless they actually put a sniffer in the tailpipe, then you are screwed either way (high flow cats don't do shit)

The catted option definitely has an effect on power, but helps to avoid issues with CELs/emissions. I need to do some research into how IL is with emissions. If they're fairly lax I will be getting the Tomei el header, but if they are strict I am going to get a catted el to avoid any issues.

if it is a problem I would swap out to the old header. I don't want to take the chance of a cat in the header. Aftermarket cats aren't the most reliable in high heat situations. I would do a bit of research before taking the plunge!
I had the same conondrum wanted headers but with a cat. Luckily I waited and got an amazing set for 700 bucks or so iirc. Without a cat though.

Fair enough. Full Tomei Expreme header back exhaust it shall be!

I'm pretty impressed with the quality and price of the Tomei Expreme headers, pretty sure that's the way I'm going to go. Should be sweet with an Expreme 60s exhaust too. :D

A kid on my swim team has had that exact car. I would've shown this to him, but he totaled the 'Rex because, while trying to do donuts in the school parking lot, he plowed into the back of another student's pickup truck. So now he has a BMW.

Consider some JDL UEL headers! It is as effect as most of the EL options plus they fit beautifully! Dem welds doe. If you wait for a sale you can get them for 800 bucks or even less like me!

I'm definitely going EL. There is no question on that. The Tomei headers look amazing, are from a very reputable manufacturer, and come in at under $650. So if I'm going with catless, then that's the route I will likely take. Apparently the full system is pretty damn loud though, even with a silencer.

Eh you do whatever you want! I am only giving suggestions. If it is too loud big resonators and a muffler will solve the problem! I DD mine and it is pretty quite while not at WOT!

I'm going to be running unequal length headers on mine in the future, but thats because thats what the AVO turbo kit comes with. that along with a Catless mid-pipe and the crawford gymkhana axle back, it will probably be loud as hell but then again its going to be more of a track toy than a DD at that point.

Eh, I would. The sound is something I like most about cars, and it irks me that Subarus had such a distinctive (and nice sounding) exhaust note that's sort of faded to nothingness in their modern cars.
It just seems to me that sports cars with quiet/boring exhausts are ashamed to say that they're sports cars.

For me, it's more about engineering and efficiency. You will still get a great sound out of a flat-4 with an el header, front pipe, and catback. If you get quality parts it will sound like a sports car.

True, and I can appreciate that. I just like distinctive sounds :)
